But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. — John 4:23 KJV
Family! It is so great being a “guest of God” in Turkey! Our Muslim brothers and sisters have been most loving and hospitable. It rained all day and through the liquid sunshine I lifted my voice with psalmist and declared this is the day that the Lord has made; I will REJOICE and be GLAD in it!
Today we are still in Istanbul. We visited the Hippodrome which was a place of past sporting events such as horse racing and could hold ~80 thousand. Currently it hold ruins, one of which is an Egyptian Obelisk. We went to the Blue Mosque which is a beautiful place of worship with 6 minarets. We also visited Topkapi Palace (Canyon Gate Palace) which was the home of the Ottoman Sultans for 400 year. It was a beautiful place but did not allow photography.
My most favorite of the day was the church of Chora. It is a museum decorated with scenes from the Bible and the actual church is hidden underneath. When it was constructed Christians had to worship in secret so the main santuary was hidden. As I walked through I was reminded of the great risk and sacrifice the saints undertook to worship the Lord God; and I am grateful that I/we can worship freely and uninhibited.
With this in mind I wonder why we who can worship freely have so many inhibitions in worship? If worship is to short we call it “car wash worship.” If it is to long it’s accused of “wasting time” and on the verge of loosing relevance. If we are to charismatic and shout and speak in tongues we’re condemned and scolded because “it doesn’t take all that.” If not we’re not charasmatic enough but reserved in nature we are condemned because “our faith and worship ought to show some signs.”
The Bible is clear on the sign that is to be shown when it comes to worship and it’s not length of time, charisma or lack thereof; but it is to draw near the Lord God with genuine love and adoration. That is the sign; and it is such that the Lord God seeks to worship him!
Let us Pray
Lord God help us to honor you with genuine love and adoration. May our worship be truly given in spirit and in truth.
